Comparison of Financial Details and Criminal Cases Declared by Re-elected MPs in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections

National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 165 re-elected MPsout of a total of 168 Members of Parliament who have been re-elected in the Lok Sabha 2014 elections. The rest of the MPs were not analysed due to unclear/incomplete affidavits uploaded on the ECI website at the time of making of this report.

Summary of Financial Details Comparison for Re-elected MPs

  • MPs Elected Again:  National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analyzed the affidavits of 165 MPs who were elected again in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.
  • Average Assets in 2009:The average assets of these 165 re-elected MPs fielded by various parties in 2009 was Rs 5.38 crores.
  • Average Assets in 2014 Elections:The average asset of these 165 re-elected MPs in 2014 is Rs 12.78crores.
  • Average Asset growth in 5 years (2009-2014):The average asset growth for these 165 re- elected MPs, between the Lok Sabha Elections of 2009 and 2014 is Rs 7.40 crores.
  • Percentage growth in 5 years (2009-2014):Average percentage growth in assets for these 165 re-elected MPs is 137%.

Top 5 Re-elected MPs with highest asset increase (Rupees- wise)

Shatrughan Sinha of BJP from Patna Sahib Constituency, Bihar has declared maximum increase in assets with an increase of Rs 116.73 crores i.e from Rs 15 crores in 2009 to Rs. 131.74 crores in 2014. Assets of Pinaki Mishra of BJD from Puri constituency, Odisha has increased by Rs 107.40 crores, from Rs 29.69 crores in 2009 to Rs 137.09 crores in 2014. Assets of Supriya Sule of NCP from Baramati constituency, Maharashtra have risen by Rs 62.37 crores, from Rs 51.53 crores in 2009 to Rs 113.90 crores in 2014.   • Re-elected MPs with Criminal Cases in 2014: 71 (43%) re-elected MPs out of 165 analysed have declared criminal cases against themselves in 2014

  • Re-elected MPs with an Increase in number of Criminal Cases: Out of these 71 re-elected MPs who have declared criminal cases against themselves, 13 (18%) have shown an increase in the number of self-declared criminal cases in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the previous elections.

  • Re-elected MPs with criminal cases in 2014 who had no criminal cases in 2009: Out of 71 re-elected MPs who have declared criminal cases against themselves, 21 (30%) re-elected MPs have declared criminal cases in 2014 when they had declared zero criminal cases in 2009.

  • Re-elected MPs with criminal cases in 2009 who had no criminal cases in 2014: 9 re-elected MPs have declared zero criminal cases in 2014 when they had declared criminal cases in 2009.

  • Re-elected MP with highest increase in number of criminal cases: Dr. Ramshankar Katheria of BJP from Agra constituency, Uttar Pradesh has declared the highest increase in criminal cases by 21 criminal cases from zero self declared criminal cases in 2009 to 21 self declared criminal cases in 2014. Raju Shetty of Swabhimani Paksha from Hatkanangle Constituency and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have both shown an increase in criminal cases by 12 criminal cases. Raju Shetty had declared zero criminal cases in 2009 and has declared 12 criminal cases in 2014 while Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of INC from Baharampur constituency had declared 4 criminal cases in 2009 and has declared 16 criminal cases in 2014.

  • Re-elected MP with decrease in number of criminal cases: Out of 71 re-elected MPs who have declared criminal cases against themsleves, 18 have shown a decrease in criminal cases in 2014 from the previous elections.
